Scott Malkin founded Value Retail Plc in 1992 and serves as its Chairman. Value Retail supports fashion and luxury brands through its nine high-end outlet villages serving the gateway cities of Western Europe, including London, Paris, Milan, Barcelona, Madrid, Munich, Frankfurt, Brussels/Dusseldorf and Dublin.
He was first introduced to the world of sophisticated retail through his role as a Partner in and Development Manager for 2 Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, California, the home of numerous exclusive brands. This innovative, award winning project was sold upon its completion in 1990 to the Japanese department store Sogo.
In Europe, Scott moved beyond the definition of traditional shopping center development, and, with his colleagues, devised a new operating model for the shopping experience that has been praised in Marvin Traub’s most recent book, ’Like No Other Career.’ Mr. Traub believes that if the Value Retail philosophy was to be applied to full price shopping destinations, it could be the catalyst for the reinvention of what has become a stale and predictable shopping center experience for consumers.
The retail model Scott has created uses a unique approach that builds a true partnership with the brands. As in a department store, brands pay a royalty based on actual sales achieved and are supported by Value Retail’s staff, most of whom have been trained in retail – the culture being that of retailers serving retailers.
Value Retail’s vision is to provide a sophisticated, progressive and complementary channel of distribution for surplus stocks, particularly attracting international travellers and aspirational, brand aware women. In pursuing this goal, Scott and his colleagues have made the traditional methods of disposing of surplus stocks unnecessary, while, at the same time, strongly supporting the full price positioning of the brands.
Under Scott’s leadership, the Value Retail business has grown substantially. In 2008, the company’s gross revenues increased by 16 percent to total some 900 million Euros.
Scott was raised in Connecticut and received degrees from Harvard College, Harvard Law School and Harvard Business School. He and his family have lived in London for the past 20 years.
